The English Toy Spaniel

The English Toy Spaniel is small stature, rigid, dog. Its nose resembles a pug's, black, short and stout. Their skull is round and their jaw has a slight under bite. Their big eyes are dark with a playful expression. The long ears drape along side its cheeks. The coat is of a feathered texture, never coarse, but always smooth. The Toy Spaniel comes in four color variations; either black and tan, solid red with some white hairs being acceptable, white with a small red spot upon their head, and lastly the tri-colored white, black and tan coloration. A docked tail finishes them off.

Personality: The English Toy Spaniel is a lap-dog lovers dream. It is one of your more affectionate breeds, promising to love you unconditionally. Gentle by nature, the English Toy Spaniel's temperament is low maintenance. You will also be pleasantly surprised by its intelligence. Their loyalty seems to gravitate towards one care taker, but they enjoy the company of many people, and even dogs. They get along with children too, older children are preferred though. They are an average barker and watchdog. Some can also be finicky eaters.

Size: The English Toy Spaniel weighs a measly 9-12 pounds and grows roughly 8-12 inches

Health Concerns: Like other dogs with short muzzles respetory problems are a concern, and they can be more problematic in a hot climate. Like the Cocker Spaniel they both suffer from eye and ear problems and both should be maintained. Heart disease is also common.

Living Conditions: This is not a warm weather breed. They will do just fine in an apartment and don't require a yard.

Exercise: They are low maintenance in this department, in and outside of the house.

Life Expectancy: 10-12 years

Grooming: They shed no more then most dogs and require only weekly to bi-weekly brushing.

History: With its earl ancestry originating in Asia, probably the pug or the Asian Spaniel, it slowly made its way West. Finally it arrived in the British Isles, and was adopted by the British Monarchy. Slowly this breed was shaped into the small, short muzzled, large eyed English Springer Spaniel of today.

Group: Gun Dog, AKC Toy

Breed Recognition: CKC, FCI, AKC, KCGB, CKC, ANKC, NKC, DKCSC, NZKC, APRI, ACR
