Unlike
training a dog to “sit” or get “down,” the stay command will
take a little longer for your canine to master. The best way
to start conditioning your dog to the “stay” command is with
the use of a short leash. Make sure to start off with small
deliberate steps away from your dog. To ensure the training
process, remember to reward you dog with each instance of obedience.
Overtime, gradually increase the length of
the pause. If your dog breaks the stay, order him to sit and
then repeat the entire exercise with a succinct pause prior
to offering another doggie treat. After your dog begins to master
the ‘stay’ command on a short leash, extend the leashes length
with a little slack. Also, move farther and further way (gradually)
while your dog maintains the "stay" position. Your
dog should be rewarded with a doggie treat while he or she is
in the "stay" stance.
To help your dog differentiate between the
“stay” command and a welcoming release, stand in front of the
canine with open arms. In a different tone say "OK!"
or whatever your personal preference is for a release command.
Next, reward the good obedient behavior with a doggie treat.
The command will prove to be a lifesaver for your canine.
Once your dog understands, down stay sit the
next command you’ll want to teach him or her is the “come” command.
Stepping away from your dog, turn to your canine, address him
by name, and beckon with your palm inward to "Come.” As
soon as your dog reaches you, order the canine to sit, then
feed him a doggie treat show your satisfaction in his or her
behavior.
