Training Your Dog “Stay and Down”

Once your dog masters the ‘sit’ command, down and stay are two other orders your canine companion needs to learn. The beauty of these other commands is that you can make the training transition from the sit order to down.

Training Your Dog the “Down” Command
Once your dog masters the ‘sit command, the next order of directives is the ‘down’ command. When you do is in the sit position, move a treat near its nose while moving the doggie treat downward. Your dog’s nose will follow the treat innately. Position your hand forward in front of your canine’s face – while he begins to lower himself, convey the ‘down’ command in a normal volume in a firm tone.

Reposition your hand down farther and forward until the canine is in a complete lying down fixed stance. As soon as your dog assumes the lying down position, praise him with the words "Good, down!" in a pleasant voice. Then reward him with the treat. Another important command to teach your canine is the ‘stay’ command. This order will aid in controlling your dog.

Dog Training Tip: To make your dog aware of your control, use a short leash during the initial training process. It will help you teach your dog the stay command. While your canine is in the "sit" position, announce the "stay” command. Whilst maintaining eye contact, reinforce the “stay” directive, your palm should face the dog. Next, take a diminutive away from your dog.

Allow a brief pause to transpire before rewarding your dog with praise as well a doggie treat for remaining in the stay position. To avoid confusing your dog, don’t be too adoring in your praise; otherwise, he or she may break the stay stance to come toward you.
